Ice Storm 2003

On February 16th, Lexington was hit by a major ice storm. Power was cut off to 115,000 residents in Lexington. For those residents  lucky enough to purchase generators, the roar of the generators became the lullaby many slept to. Residents remained in houses where temperatures dropped to 40 degrees using kerosene heaters, wood burning stoves, fireplaces and candles placed in coffee cans with water to try to stay warm. Some residents remained without power for a week. Neighbors worked together to help each other make it through the storm. Our writing teacher, Mrs. Rosenberg used the storm to provide a topic for a transactive writing piece for the third and fourth grades. She took pictures of the storm and used them to stimulate the student's descriptive language. Check out some of the writing pieces!
