Owney, the Traveling Dog

On December 7, Owney the Traveling Dog, came to visit Picadome Elementary. Ms. Johnson's and Mrs. Mullins primary first/second grade classes participated in the Owney the Traveling Dog project. The project involves a teacher and a class from each state who hosts a stuffed dog named Owney who travels around the United States by mail. The original Owney was a puppy adopted by the postal workers and lived at the post office. He slept on a mail sack. One day, Owney's mail sack was put on a train and Owney got on the train. He was sent back to Albany. He continued to travel on the trains and became known as Owney the Traveling Dog.

For the project, each class writes facts about their state on postcards and mails them to all the other classes.  When Owney leaves to go to another school today, he will take a Picadome Pride button, a Picadome student of the month plaque and other mementos from Kentucky. Have a safe trip Owney!
