Henry Clay's Carriage

Henry Clay’s Carriage

Students from Picadome Elementary visited Ashland Henry Clay’s home. When the third graders were touring outside they observed a red and black carriage. Henry Clay would use the carriage to travel from Kentucky to Washington D.C. Henry Clay would be the one who would sit in the back of the carriage. And the driver would sit in the front.

Carriages

Could you imagine spending three whole weeks in your car? Well that’s what Henry Clay did every time he made the trip from Lexington to Washington D.C. Henry Clay’s car was a black and red carriage pulled by horses. On this long, bumpy ride, Henry Clay would read, practice speeches, and play chess.

Things are different today. We don’t have carriages anymore. Now we drive cars. We have better roads, and it is a lot safer. Now it takes just one day to get to Washington D.C., and not three weeks! We also have different activities in cars now. Many people have TVs and DVD players in their cars. Kids listen to the radio, or play their Gameboys. I am glad I live in today’s time!
