Ice Houses
On the side of Henry Clay’s house were
small houses that were partly built underground. These houses were ice
houses. When the rivers and streams would freeze in the winter the
slaves would take the ice and put it in the houses. They would
store food in them. Sometimes they used
ice to make ice cream.

COLD CHILLS
When Henry Clay was around they didn’t have electricity. So they didn’t
have a freezer. I guess you're wondering how they kept things cold. Well
this is an ice house. During December they had to go down to the
Kentucky River when it was frozen and cut blocks of ice and bring them
back. As the ice would melt it would keep anything in the ice house
cold. Today all you have to do is either go to the store or get ice from
your freezer.

How Ice cream was Made
A long time ago when Henry Clay was alive,
ice cream was invented.
They went to their icehouses to get
ice. After they got ice went to get this bucket. Next, they would have
shaved the ice and put some cream on.
Today we have eggs, sugar, and
flavor in our ice cream to make it rich and creamy. I don’t think Henry
Clay had all those things than right now. I think I like our ice cream
much better than when Henry Clay was alive, because our ice cream is
rich and creamy!

The Icehouse
by Gunnar
When you need ice do you have to go outside
to get it? When the 3rd grade students from Picadome
Elementary went to Henry Clay’s home the students saw the ice house
where Henry Clay and his family stored their ice. The ice house is kind
of like a well because it is very deep down in the ground. It is not
like a well because it is dry and really cold. They had huge pieces of
ice in the ice house. They cut huge blocks of ice from frozen ponds and
rivers in the winter. The ice house has a roof shaped like a cone. There
are two doors that are an entrance to the ice house.
Today we don’t get our ice from an ice house.
We can get ice from the grocery store or from the freezer in our
refrigerator. Our refrigerator has an ice maker. All I have to do is
take a cup, push a button on the refrigerator door, and I get ice! |
