Purses

Back then Henry Clay had a horse track in his back yard and people would bet on the horse who they thought would win. People would get a purse and they would put money in it and they would hag them up and the jockey would pull it down. When they cross the finish line. And they would get the purse and the money inside it. It is different now because if you win you get to stand in the winner’s circle and get some money, and a jacket. Which prize would you want, I would want to win now a days.

The Money Bags

By Paul

Have you ever seen this kind of bag? When Picadome’s third graders visited Henry Clay’s home they learned that Henry Clay owned lots of thoroughbred horses. When his horses won a race, their prize money was given to them in these pretty bags, called purses. These purses were on display in the men’s parlor.

Today horse racing is still popular here, but the money no longer comes in purses. Most people win a trophy and a check. I like it much more.

Winning Purses

People won purses back in Henry Clay’s time. They were all different. One of the purses were big and one of. I think that meant that there was a lot of money in it. All of the purses except1 had little strings hanging down from them. The big purse had green on it. The other purses colors were dark blue, light blue, red, and dark blue. They all had white on them. The purses were with the manager then gave it to the person who won it. I think they had money in it because in case they were poor people. I would like to have a purse like that. The 2 purses have sparkles on them. The last 3 purses have lines and diamonds. They all have handles. All the purses were in a frame so nobody can take them. The purses were in a room where there was something like a pool table with horses. When you pull the handles side to side it will squeeze tight so you can have it closed. Around the frame is brown. The sky blue purse is a little dirty.
