Washing Up

Blue and White Pitcher Set

The third graders of Picadome Elementary visited the home of Henry Clay. While the students toured the house they observed a blue and white china bowl and pitcher set on the dresser in one of the bedrooms that Henry Clay’s family used. The pitcher had water to use for washing. The family member who needed to wash their face and body would pour the water into the bowl. This is the way that people got cleaned up because they did not have plumbing for showers.

"Who is Henry Clay," I asked myself on the bus ride to his home with the rest of Picadome’s third graders. Henry Clay was a wealthy lawyer, politician, and plantation owner. He is remembered as the Great Compromiser, and he ran for president three times! This photograph is proof that Henry Clay’s family had a lot of money. This is a china pitcher and bowl that Henry Clay’s family and guests would have used to wash their face and hands, and brush their teeth. Henry Clay’s slaves would have gone to the well to fill the pitchers with water. There was a china set similar to this in every bedroom in the house. These pretty pitchers must have a pretty price!

Now we have indoor plumbing, so we don’t have to use pitchers and bowls. We can just turn on the faucet and use that water to wash whatever we need!
