SBDM Minutes

January 9, 2003

The Picadome School Community is committed to all students attaining the highest levels of academic achievement and responsible citizenship through equitable opportunities in becoming lifelong learners.

The meeting was called to order at 3:16 by chairperson Darla Simms. Members present were teachers- Tammy Johnson, Juaacklyn Cunningham, Bill McMakin; parents- Tammy Lynch, Jeff Mefford.

I.     The minutes of the December 12, 2002 meeting were read and approved with corrections.

  ·      Miss Simms updated council on Science Fun Day.

·        She reported that our Budget Priorities list for elementary non-mandated items was sent to Central Office as requested by the Fayette County School Board.

II.     Budget

·        Miss Simms updated council on concerns with the new budget printout. Because of district level expenditures (building maintenance of Picadome) it is difficult to determine our actual remaining SCIF (School Council Instructional Funds) amount.

III.     Information Items

·      Extended School Services – Brenda Smith reported to council on our fall program (see attached)

·      Darla Simms stated that all students who are not showing progress according to January District Student Achievement Assessments should be referred for ESS. Council will review disaggregated data at the February 13 meeting to determine which grade levels will be included in our spring ESS program. The tentative dates for the spring session of ESS will be from the last week of February through April  (after Spring Break.)

·      Implementation & Impact Check – Council reviewed the I and I check given to them at the December meeting. Mrs. Smith answered questions concerning the I and I check. The district has not decided an I and I check will need to be completed in February (usually one is completed three times a year: fall, winter, spring)

IV.     Hiring Policy

  A. Kara Beth Price represented the Budget and Personnel committee in   presenting the proposed “Hiring and Consultation Policy” for council review. Council has requested changes in the following areas: Sections1, 2, 4 and 6. The committee will make the requested changes and council will review the policy at the February meeting.

B. Update on staffing

·        Miss Simms continues to work on the custodial position.

·        Miss Simms consulted with council on hiring a new counselor. This is an additional position approved by the superintendent.

·        Miss Simms is tracking our current enrollment. We are currently over cap size in primary. We must be over cap size for 15 days before the district provides additional staff.

V.    Work Session

Senate Bill 168 requires a public meeting to inform parents and community members of our plans to close the achievement gap. Council prefers that the public meeting be held separately from a council meeting.

Senate Bill 168 requires councils to set target areas for gap reduction between sub-groups. Our council has targeted the gap between low socio-economic students and non-low socio-economic status students (SES). According to the Gap Reduction Matrix, our gaps in SES students on the Spring 2002 KCCT scores were: 19% points in math; 21% points in reading; 29% points in science; 17% points social studies; 27% points in writing: 14.5% points in Arts and Humanities; 26% points in Practical Living); After discussion, council determined that our identified targets will be: Reading, math, and science

Revisions will be made in our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan to include specific strategies to close the achievement gaps. In order to accomplish this, council decided to have committees review the Implementation and Impact Check, our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan and the data analysis from our Professional Development on November 5th to determine strategies and activities in the following areas:

·      Needs Assessment Committee- reading

·      Budget & Planning Committee – science

·      Student, Faculty and Parent Support Committee- math

·      Curriculum committee will continue to work on the math textbook adoption.

·      Technology Committee-software to support each content area identified

·      Arts and Humanities Committee will continue working on aligning the Arts and Humanities curriculum.

Meeting adjourned at 5:34 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Becky Boling
