SBDM Council Minutes

April 21, 2004

 The Picadome School Community is committed to all students attaining the highest levels of academic achievement and responsible citizenship through equitable opportunities in becoming lifelong learners.

 

 The meeting was called to order at 3:22 by Darla Simms, council chair.  Members present were: teachers-Kathy Cleary, Tammy Johnson and Bill McMakin; parents-Jeff Mefford, Steve Stone and Bob Kinley. Visitors: Melissa Moore and a UK student in College of Education.

 

I.                    Minutes

The minutes of the March 17, March 24 and April 8 meetings were read and approved with changes.

II.                 Budget

A.    School Council Instructional Funds

Miss Simms reviewed the SCIF budget printout with council members. She explained that the amount of money reflected in section 0610 , Regular Instruction, is much higher than is actually on hand due to the fact that classroom orders are still being processed and money is not deducted until vendors are actually paid. Other budget items were discussed.

B.     Professional Development Budget

Becky Boling will bring this to council in May.

III.               Information Items

A.    CATS

Our identified gap reduction targets for Senate Bill 168 are low socio-economic students in the content areas of social studies and math.

B.   Miss Simms read the letter of retirement from Brenda Smith. This creates  a vacancy for PSA. Miss Simms asked council whether the money for this position should be used for PSA or was there another need. Council agreed to keep the PSA position and Miss Simms can begin interviewing as soon as the hiring freeze is lifted.

C.  Pre-registration-April 23 and Kinder Card Program

The Kinder Card program is a partnership between the public library, Fayette County Public Schools, the United Way, Joseph Beth and Starbucks to provide a book and a library card for every kindergarten student who is enrolled for next year.

       

IV.              Action Items

A.    Assignment of Staff Time (instructional and non-instructional) Policy-second reading – Council members read and discussed the policy. It was approved by consensus with changes.

B.     Curriculum and Instruction Policy- second reading – Council members read and discussed the policy. It was approved by consensus.

C.    Use of School Space Policy- first reading- Council discussed the draft policy and made some changes. Second reading will be on May 19.

D.    Professional Development Policy- first reading- Council members read and discussed the proposed policy. There were some minor changes suggested and the policy will be presented on May 19 for a second reading.

E.     Technology Standards –first reading- Melissa Moore presented this to Council. Members read and discussed the proposed policy. The second reading will be on May 19.

F.     Standing Committee By-Laws-first reading

     (Miss Simms asked council to add this to the agenda.)  Members read and discussed the proposed policy. This will return for second reading in May.

G.    KASC Membership- Dues ($350) will be due in June. Council agreed by consensus to renew our membership.

H.    Review of mandated policies- Miss Simms read the list of required policies and council noted the ones we have in place and the ones we still need.

     V.                 Public Comment

  VI.              Work Session

A.    Budget Policy-Council members read and discussed the proposed policy item by item. Return for 1st reading in May; 2nd reading in June

B.     Smaller Class Initiative Application- Miss Simms explained the requirements for participating in the SCI.  Requirements include multi-age, multi-ability classes, use of space available, keeping SCI classes at a student/teacher ratio of 16 to 1.  Council agreed by consensus to apply based on teacher input.
