Presents

Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters

On February 28th, Lexington Children's Theatre presented the play Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. It was based on the Caldecott award-winning book by John Steptoe which was taken from an African folktale. Mufaro has two beautiful daughters. one daughter, Nyasha is beautiful, kind and considerate.  The other, Manyara, is beautiful, selfish and spoiled.  When the King decides to take a wife, he invites the most worthy and beautiful daughters in the land to appear before his court.  Manyara does her best to ensure that she is chosen before Nyasha in this folk tale. The names of the characters in this folktale are from the Shona language and mean the following: Mufaro (moo-FAR-on) means "happy man" Nyasha (ne-AH-sha) means "mercy," Manyara (mahn-YAR-ah) means "ashamed," and Myoka (nee-YO-kah) means "snake." The play was an interactive play and the Picadome students really enjoued participating.[ More photos...]
